I always thought that Jools file dated 2/2/68 was actually what circulates as 1/23/68 or at least some portion of that show. LRosley is frequently wrong about things in his reviews! But who knows?

Bonus material on Road Trips II/2 is credited as 1/23/68 on that release, but there is no hard evidence that the Grateful Dead ever performed on that date, even at the show archives at dead.net

We may never know the true dates of some of these shows?

Perhaps light into ashes has some ideas about this and will chime in...

The jools file jglynn linked is indeed a mislabeled copy of 1/23/68. Which I said in the "February 2, 1968" thread a few days ago.
I could be wrong, though. Didn't actually listen to all of it to make sure.

We had a debate last year on the whole Seattle-dates thing, and I posted my thoughts there:

The 22nd/23rd and 26th/27th debate bugs me constantly. I would love to know because...well I don't know why. I just want to know.

I emailed David L about it and he said the label on the tapes they acquired and used for the Road Trips release indicated they were from the 23rd.

That alone should be as conclusive as possible in demonstrating there was a show on 23 Feb. However, there's the poster evidence that they played on 26th and 27th but not the 22nd and 23rd. It also seems more likely that they played on the later dates as there would otherwise by a nearly week-long gap in the tour dates. I reckon it's more likely they played in CA on 17th and 20th, then went on tour from 26th-4th Feb.

David L also said he didn't think it would ever be possible to say one way or the other which dates they played and that the 23rd labelling was the best they had to go by.

Surely someone, somewhere knows for sure? Someone that attended, someone that worked there and has a pay slip or something. There might even be reviews of shows on 26th and 27th. Newspapers might not always be 100% reliable but if there is a contemporary review saying they played the previous night or something, that has to be a good guide.

Hmmm, now I'm all worked up about it again.
